There are thousands of unique Christmas decor theme ideas out there, and selecting one of your holiday decor this year can seem like a hard choice.

However, selecting a Christmas decor theme can help ease the all-too-common stress that happens around the festive season.
So let’s get started with some theme inspiration!
Classic Red & Green

Sometimes the best theme is an old classic. The first of my favorite color themes, red and green colors have long been associated with Christmas and if you’re looking for something that will never go out of style, I think this theme has it.
As with all color styles, all you need to do is shop or create pieces that are red or green (or both)!!
Rustic Christmas
If you are a fan of the rustic aesthetic, this theme might be just what you’re after. As with everything related to this design choice, you want to focus on adding elements that are natural. Think natural wood, burlap, vintage pieces like sleds or skis and of course pinecones.
If you plan on foraging your own pinecones, be sure to prep them properly before bringing them inside. Check out A Modern Homestead’s fantastic post on how to clean your pinecones so you can avoid mildew, mold and even bugs!
Peacock Christmas

I’ll admit, I was not a big fan of this when I first heard of it years ago, but the color theme has grown on me a little. Like the male peacock, this theme is chalk full of pieces that are full of hues of blue, green and purple.
You can certainly incorporate actual peacock bird pieces, like ornaments or tabletop decor, but you can also just find decor pieces that are those colors.
For example, check out my Christmas Peacock Wreath tutorial.
Minimalist Christmas

Minimalist Christmas is a design theme that focuses on the concept of more with less. When looking to decorate, you want to think of using less ornaments, less decor pieces. The primary color choices should be natural creams and natural tones with pops of color or metallic accents.
Quick ways to achieve this look like a pro would be to have a simple flocked pre-lit tree. Decorate with simple white fairy lights around the home or add in some winter greenery in pots.
Ultimately you want to avoid too many complex decorations, keeping things simple and elegant.
Candy Cane Lane
As the name suggests, this decor style borrows its colors from the classic candy cane. Red and white stripes are the name of the game and items like classic candy canes and peppermint swirls form a major part of the decor pieces you’ll want to gather up for this.
An inflatable decoration or two would also not look out of place! I love this theme because it’s very playful and cheery, which is perfect for invoking some festive feelings!
Winter Wonderland

If you love getting outdoors as soon as the snow coats the ground, then a winter wonderland theme might be the perfect thing for your home.
Icicle lights are perfect pieces to bring to your home, either indoor or out and follow up with cozy textures like fake fur or even velvet pieces. Keep your colors cooler, focusing on white, blue and silver with pops of metallic accents.
A snowflake or two would also not be out of place on your tree and if you’re shopping for a new artificial one, you could consider purchasing a white one to decorate with blue and silver ornaments.
Scandinavian/Nordic

This decor theme is similar to the winter wonderland, but different enough to warrant its own section. You still want cooler tones to feature predominately in your home, while also bringing in natural greenery elements like evergreen branches and even some pinecones. You definitely want to ramp up the use of wooden elements on your tree as well.
Consider the color scheme to be white, grey and beige for a lighter feel, but you can add in pieces of metal for some contrast. Definitely consider a gnome or two as they feature heavily in Scandinavian traditions.
You can easily make your own gnome ornaments, following my tutorial.
German Christmas Market

One of my lifetime goals is to be able to travel back to Germany during the holiday season and partake in a few of their legendary Christmas markets. To recreate that magical atmosphere at home, you want to consider incorporating wooden ornaments, nutcrackers and of course Christmas pyramids.
A Christmas pyramid is a wooden rotating structure that is powered by candles and they are seriously cool and have a variety of looks.

And don’t forget lots and lots of candles!! Or battery operated ones if you’re afraid of setting things ablaze.
Victorian Christmas
As the name suggests, the decor theme here was made popular during the reign of Queen Victoria in the United Kingdom. This style of decor focuses on predominately natural items, like dried fruit and natural greens like ivy.
Gilded items were also made popular during the time period and are featured in this Christmas decor theme. Gilded walnuts and fruits were popular, using either gold leaf or gold powder or even tin foil.
The color palettes for this style can vary slightly, but rich deep colors like burgundy, gold and emerald green were popular.
Starry Night
Whether you want to pay homage to Vincent van Gogh’s now infamous art piece “Starry Night” or just really love the night sky, this decor theme might be the perfect one for you.
You can perhaps find ornaments that feature the painting or parts of it or just focus on finding pieces that incorporate the stars, moon or elements like the northern lights into them.
Consider finding pieces with swirling hues of blue, yellow and even silver. If you’re a northern light fan, add in some green for good measure. Even finding star and moon ornaments (or creating your own) can really make this theme a reality for you.
Black & Gold Glam
I’ve spoken about Halloween glam a few times, notably in my Glam Halloween Decor ideas post. The glam idea isn’t restricted to a season and it’s a perfectly unique theme idea for Christmas as well.
Like the Halloween style, your Christmas glam decor should play up the beautiful contrast between the colors of black and gold. Consider shopping for or creating black and gold ornaments for your tree, using black and gold ribbons instead of garlands or even drape ribbons over your existing evergreen garlands to play up the look.
Moody/Dark Christmas
I love darker richer colors on the whole, so if you are also in that camp, then a “moody” or dark Christmas theme might be what you’re after. Some people might also call this a gothic Christmas.
To play up this theme, you want to find pieces with black, darker greens, plums and even navy blue. A great way to soften these darker colors is to utilize them in cozier pieces like velvet ribbons or silk.
With your lighting, you are going to want to consider candles (either real or fake LED ones) to play up the softer, warmer light and add some shadow.
Pink Christmas

As the name suggests, this theme is for your pink lovers out there. Whether you’re a huge Barbie fan or just love the various shades of pink, you can’t go wrong with focusing on the color in your Christmas decor.
You can absolutely start with a beautiful fake Christmas tree in pink with ornaments in various shades of pink and dressed up with metallic elements like gold or silver. Add in pieces like blush wreaths and garlands around the home as well as perhaps some pink fairy lights for the right ambiance and bask in your favorite shade!
Blue & Silver
Another favorite color theme of mine is a blue and silver theme. It is similar to the winter wonderland, but plays more into the blue and silver colors. Consider finding tree ornaments that incorporate those colors in them and add unique contrasts by finding glass or white ornaments.
Look for lights are a cool white or blue to lean more into the frosty theme as well. You can turn this theme lighter or darker by simply selecting a lighter or darker shade of blue. I personally love a good sapphire blue.
Farmhouse Glam

This is a hybrid decor theme, combining the rustic beauty of farmhouse decor with a more glamorous look. For colors, you’ll want to consider warm creams and natural wood tones, played up with metallic accents in gold, silver or even rose gold.
Consider also adding in vintage pieces that have a worn or weathered look and play up natural cotton or burlap textures throughout.
Vintage Decor
This decor theme can be fun, especially as you might be able to find many pieces in thrift stores. You’ll want to locate items like mercury glass ornaments, bottle brush trees or other glass baubles.
Consider finding Santa Claus figures or even nutcrackers to further the aesthetic. Common colors include red, green, gold and silver, but you can also think about adding in mint green, pink or an icy blue if you’re looking for more of a 50s or 60s look.
Cheery & Bright

If you love the idea of an explosion of bright colors in your home for the holidays, then you’ll love this whimsical and cheery theme. For your colors, you want to aim for bold colors like pink, blue or green. You can even add in some turquoise too.
Add in some contrast with metals like golds or silvers and consider uniquely shaped pieces like swans or lightbulbs to really stand out.
Choose The Theme That Speaks To You

Ultimately, when you are browsing through the thousands of clever and stunning Christmas decor theme ideas that exist out there on the internet, you want to settle on the theme that speaks most strongly to you. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is to pick a color palette out first and then shape your decor around that.
You can even combine two related Christmas decor theme ideas together for a truly unique experience!
