How to Make an Enchanting Magic Wand For Halloween

Whether you are a raving Potterhead or just love the idea of a world of magic, one thing you need to live your fantasies out is your very own magic wand.
These wands can also make for great decor accents if you are looking to create something new this year for Halloween and it turns out they are really easy to create too!
Whether you want to create something custom for your costume this year or just want to pretend to cast a spell on someone (I don’t judge!), let’s get started with making your perfect magic wand!
What You Will Need:
- Wooden chopsticks (like these from Amazon)
- Black craft paint (or dark brown)
- Dragonfly Glaze (By FolkArt, Michaels offers a lovely 4 pack)
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Glossy sealant
- Sponge paint brushes (at least 2)
You’ll also want a suitable work surface for the paint, old newspapers or even a flat cardboard box work great and make for an easy clean up after you’ve finished your magic wand!
Prep Your Chopsticks & Glue a Pattern
I like to sand the chopsticks a touch, it makes the paint adhere to the surface so much better.
Once you’ve sanded, the next step is to create some added dimension to your magic wand by using hot glue to create vine-like patterns on the chopstick.
Let that glue dry and move onto the next step
Painting Your Magic Wand
Grab your black paint and completely cover the glued chopstick with it. Make multiple coats if you like. I like using sponge brushes as the paint tends to drip a lot less so they are less messy. You can also use a glass to hold your wand between painting sessions!
Once the black paint is dry, grab a fresh sponge brush and some dragon fly glaze. I have three colors that I’ve used over the years, so I have a sponge brush for each color.
All you do with the glaze is dab it all over the black painted surface, it will go on white but will dry into a beautiful color shifting pattern. Dragonfly glaze looks amazing over top dark or really light colors, so you’ll want to pick a base color that is either black or close to it to get the full effect.
Finishing Your Magic Wand
Once the paints are dry, all you need to do is seal your wand with a good quality sealant or lacquer. Make sure to read the instructions on your sealer to ensure you get the most out of it! Once your sealer is dried up entirely, your wand is ready for use!
Some other ideas for further customization can be adding gemstone stickers or other glittery things to the surface of your wand prior to adding your sealer, but I found the dragonfly glaze was just the look I was after.
