Not with this recipe! Grab some store-bought cake mix and a regular can of soda to create some delicious and fluffy cupcakes for all your favorite ghosts this year. This recipe can be a real timesaver if you don’t have time to make it to the store to grab eggs for the cake mix.

Easy & Fun Devilish Cupcakes
Craving some spice for Halloween? Add a little kick to your favorite icing recipe and create some fun & easy cupcakes!
Ingredients
- 1 Cake box
- 1 Regular sized can of soda
- 1 Buttercream Icing
- 1 tsp Cayenne Pepper
Instructions
Add your cake mix to a mixing bowl with a can of soda of your choice and mix until well blended (about 2 minutes).
Portion out your cake dough into the cupcake tins. For a quicker clean up, use cupcake liners.
Bake the cupcakes according to the time and temperature listed on your cake box.
Gradually mix the cayenne pepper in with your butter cream icing. If desired, you may also use food coloring to add a pop of color to your icing.
Allow the cupcakes to cool completely and then spread the icing over top using either a knife or piping bag.
Recipe Notes
This recipe requires a regular can of soda. The mini cans will not produce the same results!
Other Cake Mix & Soda Combos You Might Consider:

- Coca-Cola & Devil’s Food Cake
- Rootbeer & Vanilla Cake
- Rootbeer & Spice Cake
- Rootbeer & Chocolate Cake
- Dr. Pepper & Red Velvet Cake
- Gingerale & Spice Cake
- Purple Crush & Vanilla Cake
Honestly, the combinations are endless. You’ll want a standard sized can of soda. The mini cans will not work unless you measure out the exact amount of a full can.
The result is a deliciously fluffy cake or cupcakes that take a slight flavor from the soda. That is why I recommend you pick a soda that you actually like!
Spicy Ideas For Your Icing
Depending on your tolerance for spices (I’ll admit, I am a weakling with spicy foods), consider other spices to add to your buttercream frosting, such as:
- Ginger
- Chai Spice (1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of cardamom, 1/2 tsp of ginger and 1/8 tsp of allspice)
- Pumpkin Pie Spice
- Red pepper flakes
The most you’ll need for a single tub of icing is about 1 tablespoon or less. If you’re hesitant about adding too much spice, start with a teaspoon and add in a bit more as you mix, testing the flavor as you go.
