How to Make an Absolutely Gorgeous Peacock Christmas Wreath for Your Front Door

One of the essential decor items you need during the holiday season is a Christmas wreath.
The wreath itself is actually a decor item that predates the Christian celebration of Christmas, having been used to celebrate the winter solstice and other festivals that occurred around this time of year historically. It symbolizes traditionally, eternal life, because you typically use plants that remain green even in the dead of winter.
There are other religious and traditional origins of the wreath, but no matter what you believe in, a wreath is a perfect piece to welcome guests into your home this holiday season.
One of the more popular Christmas decor themes is a “Peacock Christmas”, so this wreath tutorial will show how you can make your very own peacock Christmas wreath.
Materials Needed:
You can find plain wreaths pretty much anywhere that you can buy Christmas decorations, same with the Christmas ornament balls. If you can’t find the colors you need, online retailers like Amazon are great options too.
- A 16” artificial evergreen wreath (like this one from Amazon)
- An assortment of Christmas ornament balls in teal, dark blue and purple (around 40mm size or smaller)
- Ribbon in similar coloring (optional)
- Peacock feathers or other themed items (optional)
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
While I choose darker jewel tones, you can lighten the colors a bit (no pastels though!) if you prefer them lighter. You can even add a vibrant fuschia or gold as well.
Fluff Your Wreath
Particularly if you bought your wreath online, it will probably be pretty flat looking when it comes in its box. Your wreath should have wire branches coated in the fake needles, so you can fluff it out so it looks a bit more like a real wreath.
Add Your Christmas Ornament Balls
Once you’ve heated your glue gun and glue, you can start gluing on the ornament balls. If the stems have ornament hooks or ribbons attached, you can remove those prior to gluing the ball into the wreath.
I like to add about a quarter sized dollop of glue to the stem of the ornament balls, but you can add a bit more if you like. There’s no sort of “magic” formula, except for you want that ornament ball to stay on your wreath for a long time!
You’ll want to add in your optional feathers and other items here as well, glue them on in a pattern that feels right.
Don’t fret if you get some glue strings as you’re gluing objects onto the wreath. Totally normal, just wait for the glue to cool and then pluck them away!!
Add The Ribbon
I fell in love with the ribbon that I found on Amazon. The only issue is it’s unwired. Wired ribbon will hold its shape easier in bows than unwired.
It takes a little longer to create the magic, definitely, but the results are amazing and the ornament ball in the center covers up your glue work underneath so perfectly!
Once the glue is dry on your bow, you can add a dollop of hot glue to the back and stick it on the wreath where you like. I like my bows to be a bit off kilter on wreaths, so not on the bottom or the top, but off to the side.
Final Thoughts
I love how this moody peacock Christmas wreath turned out. The jewel tones really pop against the dark green of the wreath. It certainly makes a beautiful statement piece to hang on my front door for the holiday season, and it’s a lovely departure from the more traditional wreaths I’ve used in the past.
